Alice joined the Sandbridge Volunteer Rescue Squad in 2002 as an EMT-B. It took her husband Michael a few years to come on board as a member of the Search and Rescue Team.
Rich Mayes volunteers as an EMT-B with the Blackwater Volunteer Rescue Squad and serves on the Marine Rescue/Dive Team.

EMT training at all levels is free. Continuing education re-certification is free. Leadership classes are free. Uniforms are free. Scholarship opportunities offered by the VBRS Foundation. Special family events sponsored by the volunteer rescue squads. Many local businesses offer special discounts to rescue squad volunteers.
Every person interested in joining the Volunteer Rescue Squads of Virginia Beach must attend a new member orientation. Orientations are held at three times a month, generally on a weeknight at 6pm, a weekday at 10am and on a Saturday at 9:30am.
